Our Premium Indigo-Dyed #11.000 Cotton Aikido Hakama is not an ordinary Hakama available from other manufacturers. It is made with only the best cotton yarn available, using methods that have been passed down through Japan's long history of craftsmanship.

The fabric is not dyed after the construction, as in the norm today, rather it is crafted via the traditional multi-step process that has made Japan's indigo dye famous throughout the world. First the cotton yarn itself is soaked in the container filled with the indigo dye liquid till the liquid is fully absorbed. Then the yarn is wrung and set to dry under the sun. This process of dyeing and oxidizing is repeated over and over again until the yarn takes on the proper shade of color as determined by the master craftsman, Keishi Takemura, the nationally recognized Master of Cultural Arts.

Traditionally dyed Hakama has the added benefit of conforming to your personality. The more you wear it - the more unique they will become - the more it will be come a part of you. This Hakama also comes with a though and flexible special rubber Koshiita insert. The Hakama has Seven lines of stitching and features the pleats that have been specifically well-ironed then stitched to maintain their shape despite of your dynamic moves and eventually create the outstanding overall appearance on your Aikido performances through the years.
(Please note that the pleats are on the inside of the Hakama).

Hakamas pleats are apparently stitched now June 9, 2017
Reviewer: Anonymous Person
They have changed their hakama design - they now have pleats sown in all the way down from top to bottom.

Wouldn't have purchased had I known this.

Otherwise, good quality

ottima hakama February 24, 2012
Reviewer: Salvatore Guarino from enna, Italy

hakama July 15, 2011
Reviewer: sourceone from colorado, united states
The hakama didnt come with stitched pleats as it said it would but im ok with that, the 7 line stitching on the ties feel great, and the feel and way it drapes is spot on. the fabric is very sturdy and the color is beautiful. ill will just have to see how it works out over time

Ah1200 Indigo hakama July 28, 2010
Reviewer: Aikido 5 days a week from NSW Australia
I,ve bought three of these overs the years and find them to be the best quality hakama on the market. Small details like 7 rows of stiching in the obi instead of 4 like other brands make a difference. Although they are expensive, if you want an excellently crafted hakama made from natural materials you can't go go past this one.
I've found they last 2 to 3 years with hard practice and lots of suwariwaza. Normally the knee area rips from being over worn. just patch it up to get another year out of it.
Recommended!
