What is Japanese White Oak?

The White Oak Wood used for Japanese Bokken, also called 'Shirogashi', greatly differs from the White Oak Wood referred to when speaking about North American Bokken.
While the North American Oak and Japanese Oak are related, the Japanese White Oak tree is evergreen, due to this it does not have a conspicuous open grain like the American White and Red Oak.
The open grain structure, of the American Oak wood produces soft areas which are more prone to impact damage.
Shirogashi on the other hand has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and has better impact strength than American Oaks.
Compared to Akagashi the Shirogashi has denser grains which also makes it slightly heavier and more preferable as material for Bokken.
Because of the durability and weight of Shirogashi, it's widely regarded as great material for making high quality Bokken.

A wonderful suburi September 9, 2015
Reviewer: Reno Lewis from Canada
This suburi remains among my favorite training tools. It has a very nice weight and good balance.

The clear coat it has is not solid and overly thick like some other cheap bokuto, but rather smooth, well finished and pleasant to the touch.

I have used this suburi in the rain on multiple occasions without issue. It does not slip from my hands, nor does it require anything more than a wipe down with a paper towel to dry it afterwards. Regardless, I do give it a light coat of mineral oil on occasion.

It has helped me improve my form a great deal in the time I've owned it, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking to do the same.

Very good Suburi July 8, 2015

An excellent training tool - well balanced, but heavy enough that you must focus on technique and not "muscle" it...has really helped my training.
