What is Japanese Red Oak?
The Red Oak Wood used for Japanese Bokken, also called 'Akagashi', greatly differs from the Red Oak Wood referred to when speaking about North American Bokken.
While the North American Oak and Japanese Oak are related, the Japanese Oak tree is evergreen, due to this it does not have a conspicuous open grain like the American White and Red Oak.
The open grain structure, of the American Oak wood produces soft areas which are more prone to impact damage.
Akagashi on the other hand has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and has better impact strength than American Oaks.
Nowadays Akagashi is a quite rare and expensive even in Japan, and is mostly used for making high quality Bokken or Jo.

5 of 5 Review of Standard Red Oak Naginata w/ Tsuba July 18, 2017
Reviewer: Andrew from United States
First, the craftsmanship of this wooden Naginata is superb.  It has a very graceful appearance and the leather tsuba/glue look to be made very traditional.

Next is handling.  The naginata doesn't feel much heavier than the bokken I use for kendo.  I can definitely see this training weapon being used swiftly considering it's size.  To sum this paragraph up, the weapon will do exactly what it is meant to do as a piece of training equipment.

Lastly, I will discuss the more financial and logistical aspects.  Price wise, I would say it is a little on the expensive side.  However, if finances aren't tight or if you are set on learning a martial art that involves a naginata, then I would definitely recommend this exquisite piece of training gear.  I could only find two other places that sold naginata in the US and Tozando had the most/cheapest options.  The shipping was free and the naginata got from Kyoto to the eastern United States in roughly a week, which is extremely impressive.

Came faster than I expected it to.  Good craftsmanship, looks like it will last for quite awhile.  I look forward to turning the red oak dark from heavy use.  Only complaint is I wish there were more Naginata bag designs to choose from. No need putting this beautiful Naginata in a less than ornate bag.
