What is Inden?

Inden is a very ancient Japanese craft, dating back to classical Japan, as a technique of imprinting patterns on soft deerskin. In the 17th century, lacquer was used for those patterns inspired from Indian (hence the name) aesthetics. The samurai culture took a liking of this simple yet elegant craft, which became part of warrior equipment and armors. Popular samurai culture patterns such as kozakura, tombo and shōbu are quite frequent designs.
