Enjoy walking with the traditional Japanese footwear, Setta!

The Setta (lit. snow sandals) are Japanese footwear which were traditionally and originally made with weaved bamboo sheath that was insulated and waterproofed by gluing leather to the sole and lastly metal rivets were attached to the heel for durability.

Making Hanao Thong of Setta

The Hanao thong is one of the main parts of Setta sandals and has a significant impact on their comfort. If the finish is rough, it may cause unwanted pains on your foot.

Shaping Insole Core

A special shaping machine is used to press the insole core called Sokoita against a flat wooden board so that it becomes slightly curved. This unique curved shape creates a spring tension on this sole, supporting smooth ambulation. The insole core is made of Japanese linden wood habitated in Hokkaido. This wood is excellent in flexibility and strength and is considered the most suitable material for the insole core.

Assembling Setta

By hammering Shirigane and Batei, these parts are firmly fixed to the sole adn then the Hanao thong is attached to the insole. Only a skillful craftsman can figure out the appropriate length of Hanao thong and form the arch shape that will attach to the wearer's feet. The last process of assembing Setta is to attach the insole, middle board, heel and sole leather together.
