What is Japanese Red Oak?

The Red Oak Wood used for Japanese Bokken, also called 'Akagashi', greatly differs from the Red Oak Wood referred to when speaking about North American Bokken.
While the North American Oak and Japanese Oak are related, the Japanese Oak tree is evergreen, due to this it does not have a conspicuous open grain like the American White and Red Oak.
The open grain structure, of the American Oak wood produces soft areas which are more prone to impact damage.
Akagashi on the other hand has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and has better impact strength than American Oaks.
Nowadays Akagashi is a quite rare and expensive even in Japan, and is mostly used for making high quality Bokken.

Red Oak Bokuto (bohi) with saya June 20, 2018
Reviewer: Jon Andresen from United States
This is an interesting product. Seems like probably akakashi but workmanship is subpar compared to other bokuto I've gotten from shops in Miyakonojo. Very light weight at 464 g. The saya only adds 170 grams so it is made of some flimsy wood. This bokuto is not for kumitachi. It is narrow and slight compared to standard bokoto so it would be at a big disadvantage. Tip rotational inertia is super light and surely the bohi weakens the structure. Finish is varnished, which is a personal dislike. Price is high, and that's ok if good product and if craftsmen are fairly compensated. Product is mediocre so maybe too expensive. For kumitachi probably better off with standard bokuto and a plastic saya plus detachable tsuba.

Incorrect Product is received May 26, 2018
Reviewer: Simon Lee from TST, Kowloon Hong Kong
I ordered a Deluxe Grooved Red Oak Bokken with Wooden Saya and I received the one without the groove that cost cheaper.  No credit was being refunded even I wrote them back "Yes, it is without the groove"
