Tozando's Bokken and any other wooden weapons are proudly handmade in Japan and they are made from only carefully selected woods. We pride ourselves in taking our time to produce a traditional, no-nonsense weapon that is well-balanced, perfectly weighted, and strong. For example, Tozando's bokken are crafted using only the finest woods.
These woods are cut into large planks that are then dried in the sun for three to six months. Next, only those planks that pass the craftsman's scrutinizing eye are cut into smaller planks. These planks are dried in teh sun for two more months. Afterwards, the craftsman selects only the best pieces of wood out of the lot and places them in a special dryer for two weeks. Because moisture greatly inhibits the integrity of wooden weapons, these pieces are once more placed in the sun for twenty more days. They then undergo one more selection process before the shaping procedures begins.
In order to provide consistency, a shaping machine is used first to determine the length, width and general shape of the bokken. After the general shape has been provided, a twelve-step sanding process is carried out entirely by hand. Only then in teh weapon polished and lacquered and only after this long procedure do we offer our customers a weapon they can depend on.
