Uesugi Kenshin

Uesugi Kenshin(February 18, 1530-April 19, 1578) was a warlord who ruled Echigo province in the Sengoku Period of Japan.

He was one of the many powerful lords of the Sengoku period. He is famed for his prowess on the battlefield, the legendary rivalry with Takeda Shingen, his military expertise, strategy and his belief in the god of war - Bishamonten. In fact, many of his followers and others believed him to be the avatar of Bishamonten, and called Kenshin god of militaries.

His original name was Nagao Kagetora. He changed his name to Uesugi Masatora when he inherited the Uesugi family name in order to accept the official title of Kantou Kanrei. Later he changed his name again to Uesugi Terutora to honor the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru, and finally to Kenshin after he became a Buddhist monk; in particular, he would become renowned for being a devotee of Bishamonten. For the majority of this description, the name of Kenshin will be used.

Kenshin is sometimes referred to as "The Dragon of Echigo" because of his fearsome skills in the martial arts displayed on the battlefield. His rival Takeda Shingen was called "The Tiger of Kai". In Chinese mythology, (Shingen and Kenshin had always been interested in Chinese culture, especially the works of Sun Tzu) the Dragon and Tiger have always been bitter rivals who try to defeat one another, but neither is ever able to gain the upper hand.

Uesugi Kenshin

Uesugi Kenshin (18 févier 1530 - 19 avril1578) était un chef de guerre qui diriga la province Echigo durant la période Sengoku. Il est célèbre pour ses prouesses sur le champ de bataille, sa rivalité avec Takeda Shingen, son expertise militaire et pour les stratégies et pour sa foi dévouée envers Bishamonten, le dieu de la guerre. Certains de ses partisans le surnomment d’ailleurs “Kenshin dieu de la guerre“ et le considèrent comme un avatar de Bishamonten.

Son nom d’origine est Nagao Kagetora. Il changea son nom pour Uesugi Masatora quand il hérita du nom Uesugi afin de pouvoir porter le titre officiel de Kantou Kanrei. Plus tard, il changea une nouvelle fois son nom pour Uesugi Terutora afin d’honorer le Shogun Ashikaga. Il prendra finalement le nom de Kenshin après être devenu un moine bouddhiste. La plupart des écrits le mentionnent sous le nom de Kenshin.

On le surnomme souvent “Le dragon d'Echigo" en raison de ses excellentes compétences sur le champ de bataille. Son rival Takeda Shingen était surnommé “le tigre de Kai“. Dans la mythologie chinoise, le tigre et le dragon ont toujours été de terribles rivaux qui ont maintes fois tenté de se tuer l’un l’autre sans qu’un vainqueur ne puisse être désigné.
