What is Shinto Muso Ryu?
Shinto Muso Ryu Jojutsu
is one of the most widely practiced Koryu Bujutsu in Japan and its followers are steadily growing overseas as well.
The founder, Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi was born over 400 years ago and he was trained in Katori shinto Ryu and Kashima Shin Ryu. He is known as the only man who defeated legendary Miyamoto Musashi with his Jo technique, although there are also stories that tell different outcome.
The Shinto Muso Ryu Jo involves variety of techniques derived from Kenjutsu, Sojutsu, and Naginata, which proves the flexibility and effectiveness of simple weapon like Jo. Although not the main arsenal of the Shinto Muso Ryu, a high level of Kenjutsu skill is required as the style mainly assumes Kenjutsu experts as the aggressor. It is also common for Shinto Muso ryu practitioners to cross train in Issin Ryu Kusarigama Jutsu and Ikkaku Ryu Juttejutsu as they are vital weapons for Torite or arrest technique, along with Jo.
