Information

This is a Standard Bokken made with Japanese Red Oak and a plastic saya(scabbard). This product is suitable for both Iai and Kenjutsu practice. Great for Iaido beginners as well as for those who practice Kumiiai or Kumitachi.

What is Japanese Red Oak?

The Red Oak Wood used for Japanese Bokken, also called 'Akagashi', greatly differs from the Red Oak Wood referred to when speaking about North American Bokken.
While the North American Oak and Japanese Oak are related, the Japanese Oak tree is evergreen, due to this it does not have a conspicuous open grain like the American White and Red Oak.
The open grain structure, of the American Oak wood produces soft areas which are more prone to impact damage.
Akagashi on the other hand has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and has better impact strength than American Oaks.
Nowadays Akagashi is a quite rare and expensive even in Japan, and is mostly used for making high quality Bokken.

Excellent Bokken, Superbly made! October 17, 2014
Reviewer: Moran Cheng from Auckland, Auckland New Zealand
I have had this Bokken for about a week now; and I have been using it for my daily Iaido practice; It gives you the similar weight of an Iaito, as the wood is so solid and tough. and I absolutely like the shape of this bokken. It comes with Plastic Saya, and Tsuba which is really light, but built with the good quality of plastic. The Tuska is slimmer than the Blade which creates great handle and it makes the bokken so easy to control. It is another great trade of mine with Tozando. Highly recommended.
