'Kendo begins with "Rei" and Kendo ends with "Rei"' is a phrase well known amongst Kendoka of all ages, the world over. However, practitioners often also say that one of Kendo’s biggest problems that they would like to be resolved, is the odor that is developed by the Bogu, from the sweat of intense practice. Furthermore, particularly with the Men and the Kote, where perspiration is absorbed, this odor is caused by the unwanted build up of bacteria.

To conduct this test, we prepared two cloth samples, and applied the special ‘BioCLEAN’ treatment to one, and not to the other. Both samples were then applied with 24,000 Staphylococcus aureus* Bacteria.

The samples were left in a room with a temperature of 35°C, for 18 hours.

When the test was complete, it was found that the number of Staphylococcus aureus Bacteria on the untreated sample had increased by 458 times to a number over 11,000,000. Upon measuring the sample which had received the ‘BioCLEAN’ treatment, it was found to have decreased to a number lower than 620.

*Staphylococcus aureus is frequently found on human skin, and is one of the common causes of skin infections.
