Information

Kunihiro was a samurai who served the Ito Daimyo who was located in Obi Castle in Hyuga. His family name was Tanaka and he was commonly known as Kintaro. In 1577, the Ito family suffered ruin and Kunihiro began wandering the country as a mountaineering ascetic and making swords. During this period of wandering, he included many interesting inscriptions on his nakago such as "Yamabushi-no-toki kore-o tsukuru" on a blade he made in 1584. This indicates that he made this blade when he was a mountain priest. There is also a blade made in 1591 with the inscription "Zaikyo-no-toki" meaning that he made this blade while staying in Kyoto. Kunihiro swords are knows as the favorites of Kato Kiyomasa and Hijikata Toshizo.

This Horikawa Kunihiro Double Blades Koshirae features a hidden Tanto blade on Tsuka end that makes this sword very unorthodox. The Kunihiro's Hamon has been beautifully reproduced on the casted zinc/berylium alloy blade. Blackened Hanaguri shape Tsukagashira and plain Fuchigane, an iron Musashi Tsuba and a sliver-plated brass Menuki with Japanese peppers theme are featured for the fittings.
