Kanetsugu Naoe is a retainer of the Uesugi clan who served Kenshin and his successor, Kagekatsu. He is best known for convincing Kagekatsu to join forces with the Toyotomi, allegedly writing a scathing letter to Tokugawa Ieyasu before Sekigahara. He is also acknowledged as the retainer whose efforts protected the Uesugi line and as Kagekatsu's faithful messenger and political spokesman.
This Naoe Kanetsugu's Sanjo Munechika Koshirae shows his religious personality by featuring the such fitting ornaments as Fuchi/Kashira and Menuki with the sanscrit letters that represent Fudo Myo-O, Shaka Nyorai and Nio. Because he was also a great worshipper of the Atago Gongen, a Japanese god protecting against fire, the round-shaped iron Tsuba features a letter of AI(the first Kanji letter of Atago Gongen that was believed to be the local avatar of Buddhist bodhisattva Jizo). Sageo is hand-woven in Sanadahimo style and the blade Hamon resembles the Sanjo Munechika's signature pattern, double Suguha.
