Maeda Toshimasu, better known as Maeda Keiji, was a Japanese samurai of the Civil War Period through early Edo Period. When the Tokugawa challenged the Uesugi in 1600, he fought with Uesugi's army. In the battle against the Mogami, he broke through the enemy lines with only eight riders, and shattered their formation. After the Uesugi clan's move to the Yonezawa Domain, Toshimasu remained with them, serving as a retainer.

The Tensho style Fuchi/Kashira is made of brass and finished in antique silver style.. Tsuba is extra big and heavy and features theme of an eagle on pine tree to recall Maeda Keiji's favorite horse, Matsukaze(literally meaning pine tree and wind). Menuki is made of silver and features the big dragon. Tsuka is bound with blue cotton cord over red-lacquered stingray skin and Saya is Shuro(vermilion gloss finish). Sageo is a hand-woven Sanadahimo cord with sophisticated two-tone color.

The extra wide blade is made of sand-cased, reinforced zinc/aluminum alloy and provides the superb balance for the dynamic air-slashing move. Hamon pattern reproduces the Kanemoto. Each parts are uncompromisingly hand-assembled by the Japanese sword craftsman, who is expert in making the genuine Japanese sword, Shinken.

The blade is available up to 2.80 shaku.  Weight without Saya is approximately 1000 gram(for 2.50 shaku). Proudly made in Japan.

Very nice sword, very well priced October 27, 2011
Reviewer: Tony Proudlove from EDGECLIFF, NSW Australia
If you're looking for a longer sword this is an excellent choice. I need a 2.60 shaku blade and in Tozando's current range this limits the choice to either this or a custom iaito. When I started to build a custom iaito to the same specifications at this, I realised that this iaito was very good value. I was concerned about the colour, as red and blue sounded a little garish, but now that I have it, that's not a concern at all. The blue is very dark and the red is almost brown - they're quite subdued colours and as a result it's a very stylish design.

My previous iaito was a dotanuki and I was looking for something lighter this time. While this is still quite a heavy iaito, the balance is superb and as a result it handles like something lighter. Once using this, I saw immediate improvements in my wazas where my technique had been hindered by the weight of my dotanuki.

I'm very pleased with this and at a taiaki it'll stand out from the many black sayas and black tsukas on display!

Optimal Performance September 30, 2011
Reviewer: Jason Loughran from Winchester, Kentucky United States
I am very pleased. This iaito has the weight of a shinken and has excellent balance. It feels solid and well built, and the blade does not waver like other thinner/lighter iaito. The blade is very wide with deep bo-hi, allowing the sword to produce a very audible tachi-kaze. If you are looking for a blade with optimal performance & feel, and would like it to look amazing as well, this is your best option. I wish I had bought this sooner.

Outstanding Sword December 15, 2010
Reviewer: Gregorio Becerra from Colombia, Southamerica
As I read before, pictures are not fair with this sword. Is just awesome!, the sagueo colors are vivid, the sword is far more beautiful than the images on the web. The balance is great, and is not as heavy as I thought! Packaging was excellent, and it took exactly five days to get here from Japan. Tozando kept their promise and shipping was free. Customs price were low and insignificant when I got to see this Iaito! Excellent!!

EXCELENTE PIEZA August 16, 2010
Reviewer: Jose from Brasilia, Distrito Federal Brazil
