What is Tornado-stitch®?

Tozando has received many comments about our products from Kenshi during the years. One of the common comments from Sensei of school students being:

"If only there was a Kote which didn't hurt..."

Because of this, we have long been researching about Kote futon which excels in absorbing impacts from getting hit, for example during motodachi.

Only making the futon thicker or harder would not make a good Kote. To make a Kote which stands up Tozando standards, we needed to make something different, and from extensive research and efforts, we came to a conclusion.

We created a special, never-seen-before, type of stitching on the Kote futon which would effectively absorb any impact and crate a Kote where it doesn't hurt to get hit.

Taking our first prototype to certain well known Kendo Sensei. He noted that with this Kote it wouldn't hurt to get hit, and even advised us that it would be useful if the stitches of the Kote were made with an angle. Since this way you would be able to confirm if the Shinai is hitting the Kote correctly or not by looking at the angle of the Shinai against the Kote.

This was the birth of the Tozando's Tornado-stitch® Kote.

In the subsequent tests we found that the Tornado-stitch® significantly reduced the pain associated with getting hit during Keiko practice in all areas. By stuffing the knuckles of the Kote with deer fur, there is also extra protection for your fist.

With this, we managed to fulfill the wishes of many instructing Sensei around Japan, and now it's time to introduce the Tozando advantage to the world also.

This is the Tozando Tornado-stitch®.

This Orizashi model is made for people who use their Kote regularly. The palm is made with hand-punched high quality deerskin that provides superior air circulation. Together with the Sillead lining inside, this Kote is a light and quick-drying Kote recommended for people who train a lot. Handmade to order.

The Deluxe Indigo-dyed Deerskin version is also available.

The following is a interview with Mr. Fukumoto Shuji,
the Vice President of the All Japan Kendo Federation about the Tornado-stitch Kote:

PLEASE NOTE: We intentionally design our Kote to sometimes feel a little tight at first. This is normal, and they are made this way to help them conform to the exact size and shape of your hands when broken in.

1st Review for Torando Stitch Orizashi Kote July 6, 2017
Reviewer: S. Walker from VA
I saw these kote originally advertised in kendo jidai and the futon design stood out. The futon comfortably absorbed impact and provides more protection without being overly thick.  If you like Mokkei but want more protection without sacrificing flexibility and ease of applying tenouchi then these kote are a good fit. The hand punched kote holes are bigger than micro punch holes. I've had no issues with the kote palm but it was a surprise.

Tremendous padding May 25, 2017
Reviewer: David Park from Kamuela, HI United States
I purchased the Tornado kote to replace a thinner lighter pair of jissengata kote.  I would have to wear a wrist pad with my old kote to avoid bruising. The new kote are padded enough to wear without additional guards. Took a couple of practices to break in.  Excellent protection for both hands and wrists.

Great kote for Keiko! May 2, 2017
Reviewer: Tuan Anh Hoang from Canada
The difference in receiving kote hits is staggering. I only feel the impacts without any pain.
There is a bit less flexibility around the wrist compared to a jissengata kote, but for keiko purposes, it is a great kote and I can feel at ease when receiving hits from beginners or strong hitters.

I seriously love this Kote! May 2, 2017

Things i love about the Tornado-stitch Kote
1) The weight: It is so lightweight! Does not feel heavy at all when i use it.
2) Protection: Despite it being so lightweight, the futon offers very good protection against heavy Kote strikes
3) Flexible wrist joint: This is very important to me - I have used too many kote where my wrist cannot move freely, restricting the waza I want to do. The wrist joint allows my hands to move easily, and makes it easy to grip the shinai correctly.
4) Fit - The kote is made to measure, and I am happy that it fits my hands so well!

I seriously love this Kote!

Great design and functionality April 25, 2017

Really happy with this sturdy kotes. They are perfect for training. As a female kenshi I'm now more protected against berserk kote strikes from beginners or just big guys.
