About the Origin of Sanada Himo

Its name comes from the fact that it was used by Sanada Masayuki, one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi`s arch enemies, to wrap around the hilt of his sword.

Sadada Himo is unique braided, intricately patterned flat style weaving tradition in the world, and can be traced back to the Yayoi period(300 BC-300 AD). Kyoto Sanada Himo have been regarded as the finest in all of Japan. In the past, these special, strong ribbons were used as straps for hanging swords, parcel wrapping, as belts, etc. For most of the last three or four hundred years, they have been used to tie shut special paulownia boxes containing precious things such as tea bowls(and other utensils), all kinds of expensive(usually signed) ceramics, and scrolls.

Sanada Himo is made using refind natural dyes: brown from the Japanese chestnut; yellow from teh Cape jasmine; red from safflower; purple from gromwell root. All together about 70 plant species are sued to obtain dyes. The strength of Sanada Himo comes from teh fact that it does not stretch more than the width of the ribbon, which is usually no wider than one or two centimeters. This makes it perfect for tightly tieing up parcels and boxes. With the rising fortunes of Japanese tea ceremony culture in the 17th century, Sanada Himo became increasingly ornamental and varied. Today, tea schools, tea masters, temples, shrines, and art collectors all continue to use their own special design. However, there are also a wide range of so-called "public" patterns, that anyone can buy.

La Sageo Sanada Himo de Tozando est réalisée par l’un des artisans les plus respectés de Kyoto, Takako Wada (14ème dirigeante de la famille).

Elle est l’une des rares personnes qui pratiquent encore cet art très particulier.  Les matériaux utilisés sont bien entendu des plus naturels à savoir du coton teinté naturellement.

Ces Sageo sont faites via des teintures magnifiques. Ainsi, la teinture marron provient par exemple de la peau de châtaignes japonaises, la jaune de Gardenia, la rouge d’huile de carthame et la violette racines de grémil.

Ces teintures sont obtenues à partir de plus de 70 plantes différentes.

Ces Sageo sont tissées entièrement à la main et chacune d’entres elles représente une partie intégrante de la culture japonaise et de la vie de l’artisan qui l’a réalisée.
