Jukendo is a martial art that combines Japanese spearmanship with Western bayonet drills that were introduced by France during the Meiji Era (1868-1912), and would later become a modern competitive sport in 1956. In a Jukendo competition, the fighter who is able to touch their opponent's left chest or throat first using a weapon called a "wooden rifle" wins. To this day, the Japan Self Defense Force continues center their training around Jukendo, and this practice has gained attention overseas in recent years. Additonally, tankendo, which is a game of striking with a short bamboo or wooden sword, has also become a popular component of jukendo. Due to the extremely powerful striking involved in jukendo, armor is necessary to protect oneself from severe injury.
