Iaido has its origins in the manipulation of the Japanese sword and is said to have begun in the Muromachi era. Iaido’s training emphasizes that everything can be made by how the sword is drawn. It teaches mental and physical strength by the philosophy of “life and death are the same thing” and by smoothly using actions and stillness.
When choosing an iaido sword there are three main points to consider – length, weight, and price.
Length: In most cases, the length of the sword is decided by the iaidoka’s height. However, depending on the school or dojo where you are learning iaido, there might be different regulations for length so it’s important to check with your instructor or school before purchasing. For beginners, a slightly shorter sword is recommended as a longer sword may cause you to incorrectly draw or return your sword to the scabbard.
Weight: If you use a sword that is too heavy, it may cause you to incorrectly handle the sword and cause injury to your shoulders or elbows. When choosing a sword, be sure to choose one that is the appropriate weight for your ability. For beginners we recommend a lighter sword.
Price: There isn’t a lot of difference in the price of the blades of iaido swords. The largest price difference for iaido swords are affected by things like the metal fittings of the blade, the wrappings on the handle, and in the skill of the craftsmanship. For example, the handle is the only place where you touch the sword and if you can’t get a good grip it can affect your entire performance. If your scabbard or the metal fittings aren’t properly installed then it can not only affect your performance, but also the safety of your equipment. Having the proper equipment when have an examination can boost your confidence.
