Information

Mihara-jū Masaie, Mihara from Bingo (current Hiroshima) was a group of sword smiths that where strongly influenced by Yamato tradition, but occasionally show signs of Bizen influence also. The Mihara school started with the founder and first generation Mihara Masaie during the Kamakura era. The swords made between Kamakura era and Nanbokucho era are usually referred to Ko-Mihara (Old Mihara) and the ones early Muromachi era are referred to as from Chu-Mihara (Middle-Mihara) and the late Muromachi era to the Bakumatsu era are referred to Sue-Mihara (Late Mihara).
The Mihara school is said to have been one of the most well known schools in Bingo, due to the many masterpieces that were made during the Ko-Mihara period by Masaie and Masahiro. Mihara blades is known to have high and wide Shinogi-ji with dense ko-mokume hada. Although many of the earlier blades featured Suguha Hamon, the later ones also mixed Gunome and Midare Hamon.
