What is Japanese White Oak?

The White Oak Wood used for Japanese Bokken, also called 'Shirogashi', greatly differs from the White Oak Wood referred to when speaking about North American Bokken.
While the North American Oak and Japanese Oak are related, the Japanese White Oak tree is evergreen, due to this it does not have a conspicuous open grain like the American White and Red Oak.
The open grain structure, of the American Oak wood produces soft areas which are more prone to impact damage.
Shirogashi on the other hand has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and has better impact strength than American Oaks.
Compared to Akagashi the Shirogashi has denser grains which also makes it slightly heavier and more preferable as material for Bokken.
Because of the durability and weight of Shirogashi, it's widely regarded as great material for making high quality Bokken and Jo.

The best jo ever November 12, 2012
Reviewer: Gianfranco Taormina from La Spezia, La Spezia Italy
After 10 years of aikido practice I've decided to buy something for a long life practice.

This Jo is simply the best Jo you can find.

With the proper dimensions, the wood quality as well as the perfect one pice cut & shape, you almost immediately realize the potential of your new jo practice.

Well balanced and lacquered you can feel that this jo will really change your practice.

During my first practice other jo seems in difficulties against this high end quality oak.

Probably I need few training session to "learn" again how to use such a Jo, but, at least, this is my best Aikido buy whatsoever!

Apreciaton of the 4.21 shaku white oal jo 1 sun October 5, 2010
Reviewer: Sebastian Alejandro Vielma Rojas from Valparaiso, V Región de Valparaiso Chile
exquisitely made of a single piece of japanese white oak, this mighty jo will prove itself a worthy weapon for hiting practice and also a sturdy support for its owner, I higly recomend this jo, specialy for taller and heavier martial artist (like me; height: 180 cm/weight:98 kg) witch would need of a heavier and more gruesome jo that would give a more comfortable grip, and more balanced manipulation of the jo
